I Have a Good Excuse

Weaselsnob has been doing all the heavy lifting around here lately. I haven't blogged in a while.  This is because:

a) We just packed up our whole house and moved;

b) I spend my days either unpacking boxes or waiting on (bad musical) hold finding out why Verizon and/or Cablevision has blown off their service window YET AGAIN; or

c)

Clearly I do not have my priorities straight.

Yum(my) Mum(my)

Easily the best effort-to-outcome ratio to date.  Happy spring!

Yea or Neigh?

My daughter begged me to let her take horseback riding lessons. I wasn't thrilled with the idea (or the cost) but I signed her up because I assumed that precedent would be predictive-- that within a month or two she would change her mind and start dragging her heels when it came time to go, as she had done before with hip hop, swimmming and the piano.

(Cue John Belushi:) But noooo!

Of course, THIS activity is the one she has decided to stick with. Even through the winter. She says she wants to become a professional horseback rider, build her own horse farm and teach other people how to ride. She even asked for horse cupcakes for her birthday celebration at school.

So, I tried. Now I'm thinking these "horses" may be just the thing to turn her off the real deal forever.

Is there such a thing as passsive-aggressive baking?

Oh, show me the way to go home ...

I'm tired and I want to go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago and it went right to my head. Sorry, I was thinking of a good way to segue into my latest "Hello, Cupcake!' fiasco - in which the theme, for unknown reasons, was "Shark Attack" - and the little ditty from 'Jaws' came to mind. It was a true labor of love, involving many, many types of candy and snack foods, the remainder of which is now sitting provocatively in my pantry.

Btw, Twinkies (the shark) are GROSS although my son assures me they taste better with icing. Hmm ...

I'll Gladly Pay You Tuesday...

Made this for a Crazy Cake Walk fundraiser at the kids' school. We decided to call it Patty Cake (groan). It feels like I cheated on my cupcake self.

The Eyes Have It

The cupcakes that I made for my daughter's birthday today call to mind: a) Geico's "Somebody's Watching Me" commercials; b) those old-school Sesame Street "yip yip yip" aliens; or c) the 18 crazy, over-sugared kindergarteners that I left in my wake.

I hope her teacher forgives me.

Aye Chihuahua!!!

Feeding into the celebration of mediocrity, Minx's kindergarten teacher brought up the subject of half-birthdays at school and sent around an email suggesting that parents of summer babies could bring in a special snack on that day. In case you didn't get the message, there followed a list of upcoming half-birthdays in the class. Bugger.

So, despite having a Mother Hubbard pantry (from the winter storms and mismanagement - not necessarily in that order), I scraped together some ingredients and made 24 cupcakes. In the shape of Chihuahuas.

Oh, and by the way, to those kids who complained that the nose was a Raisinet instead of a Jellybean: you will not be invited to the REAL birthday.

I Can Be Catty...

Jenny Linsky has been staying with us for a week. As houseguests go, she was pretty easy: she ate nothing, made zero mess and never complained about anything. She did, however, have a tendency to get left behind. And we were always forgetting her someplace-- at home... at the park... in the car... on the front steps.

This is Jenny.

And these are the cupcakes my daughter is bringing to school to celebrate the passing off of Jenny Linsky to the next lucky kid in her class.

Goodbye Jenny Linsky. May you and your dingy blue t-shirt be washed soon...

Here Comes Peter Cottontail...

In honor of the season (Passover doesn't really lend itself to cupcakes, for obvious reasons).

Did you know that the Hello, Cupcake! people have a new book? It's called What's New, Cupcake? and I will be getting my copy today.

At the risk of over-cupcaking the joint, here are some flowers for spring:

I Should Be Ashamed...

At the urging of my son, I indulged my Hello, Cupcake! obsession and set out to (try my best to) make some very adorable Pug and Bulldog cupcakes for his birthday celebration at school. At 11:30pm on the night before his big day, just as I was putting the finishing touches on my 30th and final dog, I heard my son come out of his room and throw up on the stairs.

Oh no! Poor Baby! Are you okay? Yes, yes, some combination of those words did come out of my mouth as I charged up the stairs, but here’s what I was actually thinking:

1. Holy crap. Ho-ly crap! There is throw up everywhere. Even on the walls. And all over his bed. And the floor. Must. Get. This. Cleaned. Up. Now.

2. I can’t send him to school tomorrow if he threw up tonight. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH THOSE FREAKING CUPCAKES?!
